Flash flood warning issued Monday in Jackson County. Here’s the forecast.
A flash flood warning was issued for southeastern Jackson County until 11:30 a.m. Monday, the National Weather Service said.
Areas under the warning include Moss Point, Escatawpa, Gautier, Helena, Hickory Hills and Vancleave.
It also includes Interstate 10 between mile markers 61 and 76, which is more prone to flooding because it cuts through low-lying wetlands.
Thunderstorms produced heavy rain that released between 2 and 3.5 inches of rain between sunrise and mid-morning Monday, the Weather Service said. Forecasters there expected 1 to 2 inches of rain to follow.
Flash flooding is expected in small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and any areas that are low-lying or have poor drainage.
High winds remained a risk Monday too. Showers and thunderstorms are expected before 4 p.m. and into the evening; heat advisories are in place until 7 p.m. Monday in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.
The Weather Service urges anyone who encounters a flooded road to turn around instead of driving through, which can be lethal.
