Severe weather could bring high winds, ‘potentially strong tornadoes’ to the MS Coast

Severe thunderstorms capable of producing hail, tornadoes and damaging winds are in the forecast for South Mississippi this week, according to the National Weather Service in New Orleans.

A strong line of storms is expected to move over the Coast in the late afternoon Tuesday and move out of the area by Wednesday morning.

The entire Gulf Coast, from New Orleans to Pascagoula, faces an enhanced risk of severe weather, the NWS said. Conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.

Residents in Coast cities including Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs will see the worst of the weather from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., the NWS said Monday morning.

Scot Pilie’, meteorologist for The Weather Channel, said “potentially strong tornadoes” and winds of 60-70 mph are the major concerns.

“All modes of severe weather are expected including damaging winds, strong tornadoes EF2+, large hail and very heavy rainfall within a short time,” the NWS said in their latest advisory.

The NWS advises residents to enable weather alerts from local media to keep updated on severe weather threats. You can sign up for Sun Herald’s breaking news e-mails and app alerts for your phone at sunherald.com.

“Always have a way of getting warnings when issued. This can be especially hard to do with overnight storms,” the weather service said.
