The tropics are heating up as forecasters track 4 areas of development. What to know.

It’s the peak of hurricane season and the tropics are heating up after a slow start.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking four potential areas of development, according to their 7 a.m. CST update Sunday. Three systems are in the Atlantic and the other is in the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

“None of these systems pose any immediate threats to the local area,” the National Weather Service in New Orleans said.

The system with the highest chance for development (70%) over the next five days is in the central tropical Atlantic. Thunderstorm activity increased since Saturday, the NHC said, but the system is still disorganized. A tropical depression is expected to form later this week.

The system closest to the U.S. in the Caribbean still has a 20% chance for development over the next five days.

“Environmental conditions could support some slow development of the system thereafter while it moves generally west-northwestward over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and toward the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico,” the NHC said.

The system closest to the coast of Africa also has a 20% chance for development over the next week, but forecasters say development is likely once it reaches warmer temperatures in the tropical Atlantic.

The final system is disorganized and is expected to dissipate by midweek, the NHC said.

The next named Atlantic storm would be called Danielle.
