Flooding that closed the rest area and welcome center off Interstate 10 near the Mississippi-Alabama state line has receded, the Mississippi Department of Transportation announced Thursday afternoon.

The rest area near the Franklin Creek Road exit (75 mile marker) was expected to be closed for eight hours, MDOT said in alert. MDOT announced at 2:12 p.m. the flooding had cleared up.

Drivers traveling westbound on I-10 also were advised to expect delays. Jackson County Emergency Manager Earl Etheridge told the Sun Herald the floodwater is not expected to reach the interstate.

Etheridge said the parking lot at the welcome center, though, was flooded out Thursday morning.

It’s been a wet week on the Mississippi Coast, and rain is in the forecast for all six southern counties on Thursday.

“Numerous showers and thunderstorms continue to affect Jackson County,” the National Weather Service in New Orleans tweeted at 9 a.m. Thursday. “Expect some storms to produce heavy rainfall with rainfall rates of 1.5-2.5 inches per hour. Ponding of water in low lying areas is possible.”
