A waterspout formed over the water on East Beach in Ocean Springs Monday afternoon and quickly dissipated when it hit land, Jackson County Emergency Manager Earl Etheridge confirmed to the Sun Herald.

The waterspout resembled a small tornado and fell apart near the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Lab, Etheridge said.

The Ocean Springs School District did go enact their shelter in place protocol, Etheridge said, but no students were in danger from the water spout.

It’s a stormy afternoon on the Coast, but Etheridge said the most severe weather over Ocean Springs has now moved to the east of the city.
