‘Downright disrespectful’ heat will scorch the South this week. Here’s the forecast.

Last week was steamy across the South, and a summer heatwave still in effect is expected to scorch the Mississippi Coast for the next week.

“Mother nature, you’re just downright disrespectful,” the National Weather Service in New Orleans said in Facebook post about the seven-day forecast. “It is hot, hot, hot!”

Temperatures are expected to break 100 degrees by Thursday in the New Orleans area and on the Mississippi Coast.

“Maximum heat indices may reach as high as 110 degrees along the central Gulf Coast when factoring in high humidity,” the NWS said.

Weather Channel Meteorologist Scot Pilé, who previously worked in the New Orleans area, said many cities in the South will likely shatter high temperature records this week. Mobile, Alabama is expected to hit 104 degrees by Thursday.

Here’s a look at the high temperatures predicted for Gulfport:

  • Monday: 93 degrees
  • Tuesday: 94 degrees
  • Wednesday: 99 degrees
  • Thursday: 101 degrees
  • Friday: 99 degrees
  • Saturday: 97 degrees

A chance of rain across the three Coastal counties — Hancock, Harrison and Jackson — will bring temporarily cooler temperatures Monday, the NWS said.

No heat advisories have been placed into effect yet this week. The NWS said dew points are slightly lower, which will keep heat index values below previous days.

“It’s still going to feel really hot,” the NWS said and reminded the public to stay hydrated and be safe in the heat.

“Please remember pet and child safety,” Pilé said on Facebook. “Don’t leave kids or pets in a vehicle for ANY amount of time. Drink lots of water and take frequent breaks in the A/C.”
