Tornadoes, hail possible in severe weather coming to South MS. Here’s the forecast.

A severe storm will push through the Mississippi Coast late Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm is expected to bring damaging wind gusts, flooding, hail and possibly tornadoes to South Mississippi from 3 p.m. to midnight, according to NWS New Orleans meteorologist Kevin Gilmore.

“Tornadoes and hail are our main concerns,” Gilmore said.

The NWS classifies winds that exceed 50 miles per hour as damaging winds. Tuesday’s wind gusts could be in excess of 60 miles per hour in South Mississippi counties. At that speed, the winds could cause structural damage, uproot trees and knock down power lines.

The enhanced severe weather warning also includes hail at least 1 inch in diameter. One-inch hail, about the size of a quarter, is enough to do serious damage to a roof or vehicle.

Gilmore said the rest of the week is expected to be clear and sunny. “Thankfully, this will just be a one-day thing.”

The National Weather Service issued a storm warning for Tuesday evening. The strong storm will bring threats of tornadoes, strong winds, hail and flooding across the south.
