It may be colder in Mississippi than Alaska this weekend. Here’s the Coast forecast.

Daylight Savings may spring us forward an hour Sunday morning, but Mother Nature will push Mississippi right back into the chilling depths of winter as a cold front blows into the area Friday night.

The record-cold temperatures that swept through the West coast and Midwest this week will affect the South this weekend, according to AccuWeather.

“Currently, the cold air that is expected to impact the Southeast states is diving southeastward across the U.S. Plains,” said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Rob Miller.

Tupelo can expect to drop down to 20 degrees early Sunday morning. The temperature would break the north Mississippi city’s current record daily low of 21 degrees and would be colder Anchorage, Alaska’s forecasted low of 21 degrees for Sunday morning.

Along the Coast, Harrison County Deputy Emergency Director Robert Dambrino will be preparing for temperatures in the high 20’s to low 30’s and said residents should prepare now.

“It’s going to be cold,” he said. “We’ll have shelters open and CTA will offer free rides to shelters. People need to wrap their pipes. Hopefully this will be the last one.”

The wind chill Saturday will keep it feeling like the 30s in South Mississippi, the National Weather Service said in a tweet Friday, but it’ll get even colder on Sunday.

Record lows are possible in some more northern areas of Mississippi and Louisiana, the NWS said. The Coast should protect pets, pipes and plants as freezing temperatures loom.

Harrison County will open two cold-weather shelters Saturday:

  • D’Iberville: Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center will open at 5 p.m. at 10395 Automall Pkwy.
  • Gulfport: St Peters By-the-Sea Episcopal Church will open at 5 p.m. at 1909 15th St.

Coast Transit Authority (CTA) will provide transportation to the D’Iberville shelter. For information on transportation, contact CTA at (228) 896-8080. For more information or shelters, contact the Salvation Army at (228) 374-8301.
