Tornado touches down in Picayune, downing trees and knocking out power, police say
A tornado touched down in Picayune Wednesday night, causing some damage and knocking out power, police confirmed on social media.
The Picayune Police Department posted photos of downed trees on Facebook and asked drivers to avoid the area of East Canal Street and Howard Avenue while authorities work to clear the roadway.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The tornado likely formed in a line of powerful thunderstorms that moved through South Mississippi on Wednesday. The Coast was under a tornado watch for most of the day.
About 400 Mississippi Power residents in Picayune were without power Wednesday night, according to the power company’s outage map.
Mississippi Power spokesman Jeff Shepard said crews responded to the area just before 8 p.m. All customers in the area had service restored by 1 a.m.
A driver in Jackson County died Wednesday night after a possible tornado touched down in the area, AL.com reported.
