How people on the Mississippi Coast can donate supplies for Hurricane Sally relief
The winds from Hurricane Sally were still gusting Wednesday when crews from South Mississippi were heading east with food, water and supplies to help people hurt by the storm in Alabama and Florida.
This comes less than a month after Coast residents donated supplies and money to hurricane victims in Louisiana and Texas after Hurricane Laura made landfall Aug. 28.
Relief efforts are just starting. The Sun Herald has compiled a list of how to donate to major nonprofits that step in after hurricanes, coupled with religious organizations and local cities and departments that have posted relief operations on Facebook.
Here is the list of the help that is under way and where Coast residents can bring supplies for Sally victims:
▪ Biloxi Fire Museum personnel continue to raise funds for building supplies to help restore homes for first responders in the Laura and Sally disaster zones. Donate securely online.
▪ Biloxi Police Department is helping repair homes, deliver supplies and prepare food for Sally victims. Drop off cleaning supplies, food and drinks at the Harrison County Sheriff’s Lorraine Road Work Center at 10046 Lorraine Road in Gulfport through Friday. Details: Robin Weaver at 228-896-0606.
▪ Gulf Park Estates/St. Andrews Fire Department is seeking cleaning products, gloves, pet food and other supplies to get to the areas most impacted Hurricane Sally, along with tools to help with tree removal and repairs. Items can be dropped off at Station 2 at 2300 East Simmons Bayou, Ocean Springs.
▪ City of Pascagoula is collecting hurricane relief supplies Thursday and Friday at the Pascagoula Senior Center on Live Oak Avenue. The goal is to have enough donations for volunteers with the Fire Department to make a trip this weekend.
Supplies most needed are face masks, hand sanitizer, gloves, personal hygiene items, cleaning products, bottled water and ready to eat foods.
▪ Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers restaurants will host a fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 22, to support communities in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas impacted by Hurricanes Laura and Sally. From open to close, participating Raising Cane’s restaurants in those states will donate 15% of the day’s sales to local American Red Cross chapters and SBP, a Louisiana-based disaster resilience and recovery organization whose mission is to shrink the time between disaster and recovery. The company hopes to raise at least $100,000.
