A top hurricane chaser is living on the MS Coast. ‘Do not write Marco off,’ he warns

A top U.S. hurricane chaser living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the 2020 season is gearing up for Hurricane Marco and Tropical Storm Laura.

Josh Morgerman has seen over 51 eye wall penetrations and is currently living in a Bay St. Louis home that survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Morgerman, known as iCyclone to his thousands of Facebook and Twitter followers, said he’s “laser-focused” on Hurricane Marco as the storm threatens the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines.

“The forecast has it bending into Southeast Lousiana ... but I have a suspicion that Mississippi is still in play,” Morgerman told the Sun Herald on Sunday.

He is at home and said his plan for is to “wait and see” before he decides whether he’ll stay here or head to Southeast Louisiana to watch Marco come ashore.

Morgerman is not paying attention to the Marco computer models. Instead, he’s watching the radar.

“Computer models are like crystal balls. They tell you what might happen in the future. They aren’t sophisticated enough to tell you every little wobble the eye makes as it approaches the coastline,” he said. “In those final 24 hours (before landfall), radar shows you exactly what is happening. It is the real-time details that matter in those final hours.”

Morgerman said Coast residents should be vigilant and have a plan.

“Do not write Marco off,” he said. “Mississippi is still under threat. Keep an eye on this thing, you don’t know where it is going to go.”

Morgerman said he has not made any decisions yet about Laura as it is too early to tell where the storm will make landfall.
