A tropical system is expected to strengthen in the Gulf. What’s it mean for MS Coast?

A tropical wave north of Cuba has a 40% chance of developing into a tropical system after it enters the eastern Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The system is forecast to move over the southeastern Gulf later today, into the central Gulf on Wednesday and the northwestern Gulf on Thursday and Friday.

Southwest Louisiana and Texas are expected to see the most significant impact from the system, but the Mississippi Gulf Coast could see rain on Thursday.

“We’re still kind of watching to see what type of development we might get,” said Tim Destri of the National Weather Service in Slidell. “The Mississippi Gulf Coast is located in a better situation than, say, Texas and Southwest Louisiana.”

Destri said. thesystem would have minimal impact on Coastal Mississippi based on the current projection.

“You may see enhanced rainfall on Thursday as the northern side moves through. Basically, it would be like a tropical wave. There maybe a little higher tides with east winds picking up. There may be some heavy rainfall locally. It doesn’t seem too significant, but we’ll monitor how it develops over the next couple of days.”

If the system becomes the Gulf’s next tropical storm, it will be named Gonzalo.
