Save on guns, ammo on MS Coast’s 2nd Amendment tax holiday. See when & what’s covered
Mississippi will offer a unique savings opportunity this weekend when the state suspends sales taxes on guns, ammunition and certain hunting goods.
This year’s Second Amendment tax holiday will run Friday, Aug. 30, to Sunday, Sept. 1.
Mississippi started its Second Amendment holiday in 2013 and usually takes place the first weekend of September.
Which items are eligible?
- Ammunition, including cartridges, gunpowder and shotgun shells
- Firearms, including rifles and revolvers
- Firearm and archery cases, provided the cases were designed specifically for firearms or archery
- Archery and firearm equipment and accessories, including targets, scopes and holsters
Which items are not eligible?
- All-purpose cases and bags
- Hearing aids
- Ammo boxes
- BB guns
- Air rifles
- Paintball guns
- Toy guns
- ATVs
- Knives
- Nets
- Rain gear
- Shoes
- Sunglasses
- Taxidermy supplies
- Tree stands
- Trucks
- Vests
- Decoys
- Cameras

Mississippi is one of only three states that offer the annual sales tax exemption.
Louisiana will have a tax holiday Sept. 6 to 8. The exemption covers state and local taxes on firearms, hunting supplies and ammunition.
South Carolina started the outdoor sporting goods sales tax holiday in December, 2008. Proceeds from the event benefited conservation programs. “Gun sales soared (650% increase in one day) on the first ever Outdoor Sporting Goods Tax Holiday in December of 2008 in South Carolina,” according to the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation.
South Carolina’s sales tax holiday on sporting goods usually takes place after Thanksgiving.
