MS gets $9.9 million for projects to clean up polluted Coast waters. Here’s the list.

Mississippi is receiving $9.9 million for three projects aimed at reducing pollution of Coast waterways.

The projects are funded through the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Climate-Ready Coasts initiative. The Biden administration has recommended $477 million in funding for 30 states and territories in the Southeast, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean. The money was appropriated through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Funded projects, including amounts, project names and recipients, are listed below:

  • $7.7 million, Coordinated Large Marine Debris Removal in the Gulf of Mexico, Gulf of Mexico Alliance: GOMA will administer a competitive grant program to remove large debris from the Gulf, including Mississippi Coast waters. Previously identified abandoned and derelict vessels also will be removed from the water.
  • $1.9 million, Understanding, Mitigation and Prevention of Waste Plastic Marine Debris in the Gulf Coast, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium: A partnership that includes 10 wastewater treatment facilities in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida will work to improve understanding of microplastics , develop microplastic reduction techniques, measure microplastic concentrations, and encourage collaboration to reduce microplastics.
  • $319,000, Creating a Multi-Beneficial Stormwater Park Using Nature-Based Solutions, Mississippi Department of Marine Resources: Funding will be used to develop a community stormwater park to reduce flooding and pollutants in the community of Moss Point.
