A man is in the hospital after he ambushed and opened fire on his ex-wife and another man, killing the other man, Mississippi deputies say.

Michael Anthony Holder, 37, was waiting at his ex-wife’s home with an AK-47 when she returned with 22-year-old Logan Wainwright the evening of Saturday, Jan. 31, Greene County deputies said, according to WKRG. When the two pulled up to the house in Wainwright’s car, the sheriff’s office says Holder ambushed them, firing multiple shots through Wainwright’s windshield, killing him.

After hearing the gunshots, the woman’s stepfather came out of his neighboring home and exchanged fire with Holder, deputies said, according to WALA. Holder then shot himself. He is in the hospital receiving treatment for his injury, deputies told the station.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for comment.

Wainwright and Holder’s ex-wife were in a romantic relationship, WALA reported.

“It was basically a lover’s quarrel or whatever on his part and I do think that’s how it went down,” Chief Deputy Brad Warrick told WALA.

Officials found the rifle, two empty magazines and two handguns in the home’s front yard after the incident, Sheriff Stanley McLeod said, according to WKRG.

Wainwright, who was from Alabama, is remembered as a loving son and brother who loved hunting and fishing, his obituary said. Family members and loved ones shared tributes to him on social media.

“It goes against the natural order of things to have to bury your children,” a family friend shared on Facebook. “We are definitely living in the world of the fallen where evil is so quick to take such a huge hearted soul out of this world.”

“I have no words to describe how bad my heart is breaking,” another friend’s post said. “He always had a smile on his face and was always able to put a smile on mine!”

Wainwright played football for his high school in Alabama, according to social media posts.

“Logan was a great young man,” one of his coaches posted on Facebook. “The world will not be as good without you in it.”

He was also a youth football coach, according to a Facebook post from Citronelle Youth Football Association.

“It takes a special person to come out every day and be a consistent life teacher/coach. And he was all of that and more,” the post said. ”He was a great mentor and a big reason of our parks success. We will always have you in our hearts and will forever be thankful for your loyalty to the kids and us.”

Greene County is about 70 miles north of Biloxi.
