There are 2 designs left. Which could become Mississippi’s new state flag?
Mississippi’s commission to design a new state flag narrowed its options from five to two on Tuesday.
The two flags remaining are the predominantly blue Great River design with a red, white and blue shield and the flag that features a magnolia at its center with a blue background along with red and gold bars down each side.
The commission will make its final choice in a meeting on Sept. 2 with the winner going before voters on the Nov. 3 ballot.
The three flags that were removed from contention were the options that had an outline of Mississippi’s western border on its left side, the blue flag that featured a magnolia tree and a design similar to the remaining magnolia flag that had a white background.
The magnolia flag with the white background at its center was the last design to be eliminated.
The Great River design will keep its current look moving forward, but the commission decided to the broaden the bars on both sides of the Magnolia flag.
Before eliminating three designs, the panel observed all five flags as they were raised atop a pole in front of the state capitol building in Jackson
“When you run a flag up a flagpole, it sure looks different that it does on paper,” said Reuben Anderson, who is leading the commission. “That’s a great idea, whoever came up with it. They all looked good to me.”
