Former MS Governor Phil Bryant has a new stance on state flag with Confederate emblem
Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant said Thursday that he supports replacing the state flag with a new banner that would feature the state seal.
Bryant, who served as governor from 2012 to 2020, opposed any action to remove the Confederate emblem from the state flag during his tenure.
“I was proud as Governor to add “In God We Trust” to the State Seal with (Gov. Tate Reeves) and (House Speaker Philip Gunn),” Bryant said in a tweet. “It will make a great Mississippi State Flag.”
Momentum has been building in the state legislature to change the state flag, with many of the state’s top elected officials coming out in support of the change.
Current Gov. Tate Reeves has repeatedly said that a state-wide vote should be required to change the flag, but he acknowledged Wednesday night in a statement that the flag would change if the state legislature gains a veto-proof majority.
A vote in the state legislature could come as early as this week.
