Democrats and Republicans are divided on the Confederate Battle Flag in the latest Gallup poll
Seventy-eight percent of Republicans view it as a symbol of Southern pride, the poll conducted July 1-5 among 2,013 adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia found. Only 32 percent of Democrats held that view.
The opinion of the GOP has remained fairly steady since 1992, when 75 percent held the Southern pride view. Among Democrats at that time, 69 percent had the same view but the percentage has steadily declined to the current low. Among blacks, only 19 percent said it was a symbol of pride and 69 percent said it was a symbol of racism. Among whites, 27 percent said it was a symbol of racism.
