Special judge appointed for McDaniel election challenge

A retired chancery court judge has been appointed to hear Chris McDaniel's challenge of his loss to Sen. Thad Cochran in the June 24 primary runoff.

McDaniel's challenge, filed in Jones County, wants the court to overturn Cochran's victory and declare McDaniel the winner. Travis Childers is the Democratic nominee for the Nov. 4 general election.

McDaniel also wants an injunction to prevent the Republican Party from naming Cochran the nominee until after the challenge is heard.

State Supreme Court Chief Justice William L. Waller Jr. appointed Senior Status Judge Hollis McGehee of Lucedale to hear the case.
