Report accuses Tea Party Express-linked group of shady charity work on behalf of Marines

The leader of Tea Party group that played a role in Chris McDaniel's U.S. Senate campaign raised money for troops in Afghanistan only to spend most of the donations on its members and their political consulting firms, The Daily Beast is reporting this morning.

According to Kim Barker of ProPublica, Move America Forward adopted 800 Marines fighting in Afghanistan and raised money to send them care packages. One problem, she notes: The Marines in the 1st Marine Division battalion nicknamed Geronimo, which Move claimed got the packages, weren't even in Afghanistan. Geronimo was deployed in Okinawa, Japan, at the time.

Move America Forward was started by Sal Russo, who also helped form the political action committee behind Tea Party Express, which made two campaign tours across Mississippi on behalf of McDaniel.

And there are other problems. Barker says the group misled donors and inflated its accomplishments and used without permission stories and photos from other groups in its fundraising appeals.

Charity Navigator rates the charity zero stars and other experts say it could be violating tax laws.
