State Democratic Party endorses eminent domain measure

A press release from the Mississippi Democratic Party:

At Saturday’s regular meeting of the State Democratic Executive Committee, the Mississippi Democratic Party endorsed Constitutional Amendment Initiative Number 31 that will appear on the November 8, 2011 general election ballot. The Democratic Party calls for a “Yes” vote on the initiative.

“Since the U.S. Supreme Court wrongly decided in 2005 that the U.S. Constitution gives little protection to the property rights of individuals whose property can be taken by government and sold or given to someone else under eminent domain, many states have decided to protect those rights in their state constitutions. The question on the ballot in Mississippi on November 8 is simple: ‘Should government be prohibited from taking private property by eminent domain and then transferring it to other persons?’ By unanimous vote, our state Democratic Executive Committee answers ‘YES’, and urges all Mississippi voters to answer likewise when they vote in November,” said Jamie Franks, Chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party.
