Wicker calls Trump’s controversial social media post ‘totally unacceptable’
U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker took the rare step of speaking out against President Trump on Friday over a controversial social media post from one of the president’s accounts.
“This is totally unacceptable. The president should take it down and apologize.” was posted to the senator’s account on X at 10:48 a.m.
The clip in question, set to the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight,” depicted former president Barack Obama and Michelle Obama as apes at the end of a video Trump shared containing claims about voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
The White House, at first, defended the clip as an “internet meme video” and told critics to “stop the fake outrage”. Later, after significant blowback from Democrats and Republicans alike, the post was deleted and a White House official said that a staffer had “erroneously” made the post.
