Race for Hancock County school board too close to call, unofficial returns show
The race for District 2 school board member in Hancock County was too close to call Tuesday, though voters in Harrison County voted in one new school board member with a second headed into a runoff election, unofficial returns showed.
Unofficial election returns Tuesday had Daniel Henley winning the race by just three votes, with the final count showing Henle with 634 votes and incumbent Tammy Ladner Garber with 631 votes.
It may be several days before all the affidavit and other votes are counted to certify a winner.
In his bid for the seat, Henley touted his 20 years of experience in education, having served over the years as a principal, teacher, college instructor, coach and bus driver. He also vowed to make decisions as a member of the school board member based on what is “best for the kids and community, (and) not personal agendas.’
In August, Hancock County parents expressed outrage after the School Board voted to terminate then Superintendent Teresa Merwin after less two years on the job.
After her termination, parents attended school board meetings to demand action against Merwin but little information was released
In Harrison County, Steven Ramsey defeated Crystal Wingo in a run for the District 2 school board seat.
Unofficial returns showed Ramsey received 1,745 votes followed by Crystal Ringo, who received 1,250 votes.
In the race for District 2 school board member in Harrison County, unofficial returns show Tom Daniels with 935 votes followed by Betty Daniel (no relation) with 919 votes, prompting a runoff election between the two.
Five people ran for the District 2 school board seat.
