Mississippi Democratic delegates unanimous and united in support for Kamala Harris
Mississippi’s state Democratic delegates have decided, unanimously, to use their votes in support of the 2024 presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris during a Monday afternoon meeting closed to the public.
Rickey Cole, Mississippi’s fourth district chair and a former chair of the state party, confirmed the delegates’ unanimous intentions to the Sun Herald.
“There’s lots of enthusiasm for the vice president,” Cole said.
Following President Joe Biden’s decision to drop out of the presidential campaign on Sunday afternoon, he’s endorsed his former running mate Harris as the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination. In dropping out, the Democratic delegates that pledged to back Biden were no longer bound to exclusively support him, giving them the freedom to side with whoever they want.
In order to win the nomination, Harris must secure at least 1,976 delegates at the Democratic National Convention. Biden had secured 3,896 before dropping. As of 7:00 p.m. Monday evening, Harris is backed by 1,526 delegates nationwide, according to the Associated Press.
Assuming Mississippi’s Democratic delegates stay true to their word, Harris can count on 40 more delegates to her side. Officially, that’ll take place at the DNC in Chicago from August 19-22.
