Plane Passenger's Head Sucked Out of Cabin Window After It Shatters

A passenger was nearly sucked out of a plane window when it shattered mid-air on Friday, witnesses said.

The Ryanair flight was travelling from Thessaloniki in Greece to Memmingen in Germany when the window “dislodged,” according to the airline.

Greek media said that a broken piece of debris detached from one of the plane’s engines and struck the window, causing it to shatter.

A witness said that the head and shoulders of one passenger were pulled out of the plane, before the individual was pulled back inside by other passengers, according to France24. The passenger has been hospitalized, but is believed to be in a stable condition.

Ryanair said in a statement: “A Ryanair flight from Thessaloniki to Memmingen on Friday morning (10 July) returned to Thessaloniki shortly after take-off when a passenger window dislodged inflight. The aircraft landed normally and passengers returned to the terminal.

“One passenger requested and received medical assistance on the ground in Thessaloniki. In order to minimize any delay, a replacement aircraft was arranged to bring passengers to Memmingen which departed Thessaloniki at 9:53 local this morning.”
