US military says it carried out strikes in southern Iran
WASHINGTON - The U.S. military said it had carried out strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and Iranian boats that it said were attempting to lay mines, despite the ongoing ceasefire.
"U.S. forces conducted self-defense strikes in southern Iran today to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces," a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM, said. The U.S. military was exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire but would continue to defend its forces, the spokesman added.
Iranian media reported several deaths after a U.S. strike near Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
The U.S. military initially provided no information on possible casualties and provided no further details on the attacks on Iranian targets.
Although the ceasefire in the war with Iran is largely holding, there have already been several attacks by both sides around the Strait of Hormuz. In early May, Iran attacked U.S. warships in the strait with missiles and speedboats, while the U.S. struck targets on the Iranian mainland.
