Trump jokes about 'threesome' involving him, his sons and Medal of Honor

President Donald Trump suggested that he would give himself and either Eric Trump or Donald Trump Jr. the Congressional Medal of Honor to become part of what would be the third father-son pair to be given the award.

"I see my two beautiful sons sitting there. I think I'm going to give one to myself, one to them, and we'll have a threesome," Trump said at the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota, on July 1.

The Medal of Honor is the nation's highest military honor and is intended to honor servicemembers that distinguish themselves in combat "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty."

"I'll pick out one of the two and give them the Congressional Medal of Honor for something, for their genius at hunting and I'll get one for taking on 'Russia, Russia, Russia' or something," Trump said.

Trump made a similar statement earlier in the day during a ceremony announcing that the Medal of Honor awarded to the Roosevelt had been donated to the library.

"I want to give one to myself, but they tell me and I'm not allowed to," Trump said. "What have I done … to deserve it and they couldn't think of anything, so I'm not happy with them today."

Theodore Roosevelt is the only president to have received the Medal of Honor, awarded to him in 2001 by then President Bill Clinton for leading a charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

His son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., was awarded the medal for his actions on D-Day during World War II. "His valor, courage, and presence in the very front of the attack and his complete unconcern at being under heavy fire inspired the troops to heights of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice," his citation reads.

The first father-son pair to have won the medal is Arthur and Douglas MacArthur. Arthur earned the award for actions taken during the Civil War and Douglas earned the award for "preparing the Philippine Islands to resist conquest" during World War II.
