Deputy told inmate to meet him in the bathroom, then attacked him, Texas police say
A Texas deputy was fired and arrested after officials say he attacked an inmate and tried to get rid of the evidence.
David Mauricio Dominguez, 19, is charged with assault causing bodily injury, official oppression and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, according to a news release from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
McClatchy News reached out to Dominguez’s attorney on Feb. 20 for comment but did not immediately hear back.
On Feb. 3, Dominguez was working as a deputy at the Bexar County Adult Detention Center when he “instigated” an altercation with an inmate, officials said.
Dominguez told the inmate to “meet him in the restroom,” the sheriff’s office said. When the inmate made his way to the shower area, Dominguez attacked him, hitting him multiple times, the release said.
According to an arrest affidavit, Dominguez struck the inmate in the head and torso, then slammed his head on the ground.
Dominguez’s radio activated during the incident and alerted officers, allowing them to hear the commotion, the sheriff’s office said.
When other deputies showed up to check on Dominguez, he denied there was an altercation, officials said.
He later told investigators the inmate attacked him. However, multiple inmates gave statements that backed up the victim’s account.
Investigators also learned that Dominguez tried to wash blood off the inmate’s uniform to get rid of evidence, according to the sheriff’s office.
After he was arrested, Dominguez was fired from the agency.
