Baby Jesus figure appears at Colorado fire station with note: ‘I made a dumb mistake’
A baby Jesus figure — swaddled in porcelain cloth — appeared at a fire station in Colorado with a handwritten apology note attached to its body, police said.
“I’m really sorry,” the note read. “I made a dumb mistake in the moment, it won’t happen again.”
The figure was anonymously dropped off four days after being snatched from the city square’s Nativity scene, Fort Collins police said in a Dec. 19 Facebook post.
In an earlier Facebook post on Dec. 17, police shared a blurry image of a person smiling while walking away with the baby Jesus.
“Everybody was just kind of happy that it was returned and glad it made its way to the fire station,” a spokesperson for the Poudre Fire Authority told McClatchy News. “One of our chiefs was like, ‘Well, I’m glad Christmas was saved.’”
The spokesperson said the fire station is a “safe haven” location — where parents can anonymously leave newborns, according to the Colorado Safe Haven law — and she wonders if that might be why the person chose to bring it there.
Several people commented on the Facebook post, celebrating the figure’s return.
One person said the statuette swiper “just needed a little time with the Lord.”
Others reflected on the religious significance of it being brought back.
“It’s a Christmas miracle!” one person said.
“That actually warms my heart, repentance is a beautiful thing,” another person said.
Police said no further information is known about the person who took and returned the figure.
