Resilient shelter dog on the mend after abuse left her paralyzed in Kansas. Meet Kita
A sweet little Maltese is healing at a Kansas shelter after experiencing some horrifying abuse that left her without a limb, staff said.
Kita arrived at the Great Plains Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Merriam after she had been in horrible pain from two separate injuries, the shelter said.
“When Kita arrived at our shelter, she was paralyzed in her hind legs and suffering from severe corneal scarring after hot oil had been thrown in her face,” the shelter said in a Oct. 24 Facebook post. “Despite her immobility, she endured agonizing pain from a fractured left femur.”
At the time she was brought in, she was in critical condition and had given birth to four puppies while paralyzed, an Oct. 19 post said. Witnesses said neighbors threw the oil in her face.
The shelter decided to amputate her leg, which will give “her a chance to live free from pain.”
The tiny pup is now on the mend but has a long road ahead of her.
“Despite the unimaginable cruelty she has endured, she is safe with us now,” the shelter said. “We will provide her with the love, care, and medical attention she needs.”
McClatchy News reached out to the Great Plains SPCA for more information on Oct. 24 but did not immediately receive a response.

Merriam is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Kansas City, Missouri.
