A man told deputies he was shot by three men who confronted him on a hiking trail after midnight, California sheriff’s officials reported.

The encounter took place at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, in San Marcos, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Three men wearing dark hoodies approached him and one shot him in the leg before they ran away, deputies said. The hiker called for help from nearby residents.

He was taken to a hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, deputies said.

Deputies found a “ghost gun,” an unregulated, unserialized and untraceable firearm, near the trail, sheriff’s officials said.

They ask anyone with information to call 760-751-4400.

San Marcos is about a 35-mile drive north from San Diego.
