An 18-year-old had to be extricated from his vehicle after crashing head-on into a deputy’s patrol car, police said.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office Patrolman Richard Jasinski was traveling southbound on a two-lane road at about 1 a.m. Jan. 21 when the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, traveling northbound, crossed the centerline and struck his vehicle head-on, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

The driver of the Impala was taken and admitted to a hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Jasinski was taken to the hospital for treatment and released, according to police.

Police said they are awaiting official toxicology results, but “alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash,” according to the release.

Indiana State Police said they are investigating the incident.
