A woman and her small dog were hit and killed as she chased after her pet in North Carolina, police said.

The woman was trying to catch the dog after it ran onto U.S. Highway 52. That’s when an “unknown vehicle” struck the woman and pup, both of whom were found dead in the roadway, the Winston-Salem Police Department wrote in a news release.

Officers said the two were killed at about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. The crash was reported near University Parkway, northwest of downtown Winston-Salem.

The woman who died was identified as 51-year-old Patricia Luffman Casper.

An investigation continues into the crash, which closed a southbound stretch of U.S. Highway 52 for hours before it reopened, according to police and the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Officers in their news release didn’t say whether anyone faces charges, and the department told McClatchy News via email that it didn’t know additional details about the vehicle involved in the crash as of early Oct. 30.

Winston-Salem police have reported 25 traffic-related deaths so far this year, compared to 17 at the same time in 2022.

Police ask anyone with information about the Oct. 29 crash to call them at 336-773-7700, Crime Stoppers at 336-727-2800 or a Spanish language line at 336-728-3904. People also can contact the Text-A-Tip Program at 336-276-1717 or reach out to Crime Stoppers online.
