A child and an 18-year-old who hid in a closet during a home break-in are credited with helping deputies capture two armed burglars in eastern North Carolina, according to law enforcement.

“Deputies responded to a 911 call from one juvenile, age 10 and a teen, age 18, hiding in a closet, whispering that two men were inside their residence,” the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 27 news release.

The burglary happened around 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, on Hatcher Drive in the Riverwoods community near Morehead City. Morehead City is about 150 miles southeast of Raleigh.

“The girls were extremely brave and did everything right by calling 911 and remaining hidden and quiet until deputies arrived,” Sheriff Asa Buck said.

Deputies arrived and found the two suspected burglars “down the street and took them into custody.”

Surveillance video revealed the men were armed and had entered two homes on Hatcher Drive, officials said.

Bond was set at $250,000 each for the men, who are ages 22 and 27. They have been charged with:

  • Two counts of felony breaking and entering.
  • Two counts of felony larceny.
  • Two counts of conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and larceny.
  • One count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
  • One count of possession of a concealed handgun.
  • One count of injury to real property.
