A lottery player spent $3 on a ticket — and won a much bigger prize in North Carolina.

The ticket is worth $2 million after it matched most of the numbers in the Powerball drawing on Monday, Aug. 14, according to the N.C. Education Lottery.

“The ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls to win $1 million,” lottery officials wrote in a news release. “The prize doubled to $2 million when the 2X multiplier hit.”

The lucky ticket was sold at a Wegmans grocery store in Wake Forest, roughly 15 miles northeast of downtown Raleigh. But as of 1:45 p.m. Aug. 15, the winner hasn’t cashed in the big prize, officials told McClatchy News in an email.

The ticket holder still has time to come forward, since the lottery gives winners six months to claim their prizes. The white balls picked in the drawing were 32-34-37-39-47, with red ball number 3.

Though the Wegmans shopper won the biggest prize nationwide in the Aug. 14 drawing, they missed the $220 million jackpot by one number. No one hit the jackpot, which now stands at an estimated $236 million, the Powerball website says.

To score a jackpot win, Powerball players must beat 1-in-292 million odds.
