Dad of two with ‘zest for life’ dies cycling in Oregon. ‘Our family is devastated’
A father of two was cycling along an Oregon highway when he was struck and killed by a vehicle.
Now friends, family and colleagues are grieving the passing of 48-year-old Mark Hendrickson whose “zest for life was immeasurable.”
Hendrickson was riding a bike at about 7:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, from the Timberline Line Lodge on State Route 173 in Government Camp, Oregon State Police said in a news release.
A 71-year-old driver in a white Hyundai Tucson struck Hendrickson during a left turn, sending him flying off his bicycle, troopers said. Hendrickson was found unresponsive on the road and died at the scene.
Hendrickson was a beloved member in his community and worked as a mountain manager for Mount Hood Skibowl for four years, the resort wrote in an Aug. 6 Facebook post.
“He exuded greatness and strived for excellence while at the same time gaining respect from everyone who he came in contact with. Mark not only made Mt. Hood Skibowl a better place to work and visit, he made all of us just better people!” the resort said.
“We at Mt Hood ski Patrol ... share this with heavy heart & sadness. Please pray for him & his family. A great man and mt operations manager. He will be missed but always remembered,” Bill Hof wrote on Facebook.
“Our family is devastated with the sudden, tragic loss of our nephew Mark,” Anne Cremons said on Facebook. “No one who adds so much joy, heart, and positive energy to this world should ever be lost at such a young age, and leave behind a family who was the world to him and loved him so much.”
He is survived by his wife and two sons, the resort said.
A GoFundMe was created to help support his grieving family.
Government Camp is a town at the base of Mount Hood, and it is about 55 miles southeast of Portland.
