A 6-year-old boy with autism died Sunday, April 9, after he fell into a neighbor’s pond, Ohio officials say.

The boy was visiting relatives in Hartsgrove Township and was playing hide-and-seek when he went missing, the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Twenty minutes later, he was discovered by neighbors in a pond on their property, the sheriff said.

The neighbor administered CPR to the child until first responders arrived. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to the sheriff.

Sheriff’s officials have not publicly released the identity of the child.

Hartsgrove Township is about 50 miles east of Cleveland.
