A woman was struck and killed by a garbage truck, according to South Carolina officials.

She was hit around 6:15 a.m. March 13 in Anderson, according to WSPA.

A county waste maintenance worker was turning into the parking lot of HOPE Missions, a shelter and community center for people experiencing homelessness, Anderson Police Chief Jim Stewart told McClatchy News.

The worker was watching a pedestrian on the right side of his truck and did not see the woman, who was lying in the parking lot on the left side of his truck, Stewart said.

The coroner’s office will conduct an autopsy, he said. The driver is not suspected to have been impaired, he said.

The woman’s name has not been released.

The Anderson County Coroner’s Office did not respond to a request for information from McClatchy News. A spokesperson for Anderson County did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Anderson is about 115 miles northwest of Columbia.
