Man sleeping in wheelchair outside McDonald’s is killed, CA officials say. Two charged
A man was sleeping in front of a McDonald’s in California when he was shot and killed .
Gerold Lipeles, 69, a double amputee, was sleeping in his wheelchair outside of a South Los Angeles McDonald’s on May 17 when a woman opened fire on him, according to KTLA.
The shooting happened near the intersection of South Western Avenue and West Century Boulevard in the Gramercy Park neighborhood, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told KTLA.
“The murder of this victim – who was unhoused and a double amputee asleep in his wheelchair – is disturbingly brutal and callous,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a news release.
Ruby Salazar, 37, and Raymundo Hernandez, 34, have been charged with the killing, according to the news release.
Salazar was charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon. “The complaint includes special allegations of use of a firearm, infliction of great bodily injury and use of a firearm during a specified offense,” the release says.
Hernandez was charged with one count of murder.
Police believe that Salazar shot another person just four days after shooting Lipeles, NBC Los Angeles reported. Stella Polly, 67, was shot in the back by Salazar while sitting at a bus stop, according to officials. She survived.
Anyone with additional information on either shooting is urged to call South Bureau Homicide Detectives at 323-786-5166 or 77th Street Division Detectives at 323-786-5420.
