Watch the rescue of a horse that fell from trail during race in California forest

Crews rescued a horse that fell from a forest trail during a race this past weekend, eventually airlifting the animal out of the woods, officials said.

The animal fell over the edge of the trail during the Tevis Cup Race, a 100-mile endurance ride held in El Dorado and Placer counties, on Sunday, July 17, according to a Facebook post from Cal Fire NEU.

Multiple crews, including Cal Fire NEU, the UC Davis Veterinary Emergency Response Team and Nevada County Consolidated Fire Department’s Large Animal Rescue Team, “worked all day to stabilize and package the horse so it could be hoisted,” officials said.

A Butte County sheriff’s helicopter hoisted the horse out of the forest to veterinarians waiting to treat the animal, according to officials.

The Western States Trail Ride, known as the Tevis Cup Ride, has been held annually from Lake Tahoe to Auburn since 1955 and is the “oldest modern-day endurance ride.”

Placer County is about 60 miles northeast of Sacramento.
