Woman dies after deputy responding to call crashes into stopped car, Louisiana cops say
A 33-year-old woman died after a deputy ran into the back of her stopped car on a Louisiana highway, police said.
Around 1 a.m. Friday, July 15, a deputy with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office was driving south on Louisiana Highway 16 while responding to a call, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police.
The deputy was driving a marked Chevrolet Tahoe and slammed into the back of a Saturn Ion completely stopped in the left lane, police said. Troopers are investigating why the car was stopped.
The driver of the Saturn, Christinia Estave of Denham Springs, was “unrestrained at the time of the crash” and was taken to a hospital, where she later died, police said.
“The deputy was also unrestrained at the time of the crash and sustained minor injuries,” police said. “A toxicology sample was collected from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis.”
The crash is under investigation, and no other information had been released as of Sunday, July 17.
“Troopers would like to remind motorists of the importance of safe decisions behind the wheel. While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seat belt greatly reduces the chance of being killed or seriously injured in a crash,” police said.
Livingston Parish is about 70 miles northwest of New Orleans.
