Police shot and killed the ex-boyfriend of a California woman who has been missing for months as they tried to arrest him on murder charges, officers said.

Alexis Gabe, a 24-year-old from Oakley, was reported missing “under suspicious circumstances” on Thursday, Jan. 27, the Oakley Police Department said.

She was last seen Jan. 26 at an ex-boyfriend’s home, and her car was found with the key in the ignition.

After months of investigating, police told news outlets Thursday, June 2, they believed Gabe was killed.

“Due to the information that has been yielded during our long and intensive investigation, I must announce at this point that we believe Alexis Gabe is the victim of a homicide,” Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard said at a news conference, according to ABC 7.

Before then, police had not said Gabe was dead, according to KTVU.

Previously, police had said they were continuing to search for Gabe, McClatchy News reported. In February, police said finding Gabe had been their top priority.

Police told KTVU they tried to arrest Marshall Curtis Jones, a 27-year-old who used to date Gabe, at a home in Kent, Washington, on Wednesday, June 1.

Jones had been charged with murder in connection to Gabe’s disappearance, NBC Bay Area reported.

When officers tried to arrest Jones, he charged officers with a knife, Seattle police told the news outlet. Multiple police officers then shot and killed Jones, according to NBC Bay Area.

Gabe’s father told ABC 7 his family did not want Jones to die.

“We didn’t want him dead,” her father told ABC 7. “We wanted him arrested to pay for his sins. We wanted to meet with him face to face. We wanted to look him in the eye and ask him why, ask him, ‘Where is Alexis?’”
