Missing 8-year-old found dead after leaving campsite on family’s ATV, Arizona cops say
An 8-year-old child left a family’s campsite on an ATV before being found dead in an embankment in Arizona, the sheriff’s office said.
The child was first reported missing by the family around 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 8, from a campsite near Bear Canyon Lake, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
When the family realized the child was missing, they reported it to the camp host, deputies said.
Then they found the child and the ATV in a steep embankment, deputies said.
The child was not breathing and was pronounced dead after being transported by a private vehicle to medical responders, the sheriff’s office said.
“The sheriff’s office would like to remind the public to wear recommended safety equipment and follow all applicable state and federal laws regarding the safe use of ATVs while recreating,” the department said.
Bear Canyon Lake is about 117 miles southeast of Flagstaff.
