24-year-old driver crashes into homeless encampment, killing 4, Oregon police say

A 24-year-old driver crashed into a homeless encampment in Oregon and killed four people, police said.

Enrique Rodriguez Jr. was arrested and charged with four counts of manslaughter, second-degree assault, third-degree assault and six counts of reckless endangerment, the Salem Police Department said in a news release.

Rodriguez drove off the road in his “two-door sports coupe” and into the encampment on Sunday, March 27, around 2 a.m., police said.

The encampment was on a street corner, police said.

Two people were pinned beneath the car, police said.

Medical responders took four people to a hospital, where two people died, police said. Two other people died at the crash scene, police said.

Police said Rodriguez was also taken to a hospital.

Three people experiencing homelessness were given shelter in a motel, police said.

Rodriguez was booked into the Marion County Jail.

Salem is about 46 miles southwest of Portland.
