A student at Arizona State University was arrested after campus police found an explosive device in his dorm room, according to a news release from the ASU Police Department.

Police received word from a student on Feb. 28 that another student was possibly building explosive devices in his dorm in Tempe. Officers evacuated the residence hall’s fifth floor and “found materials used in the development of explosives,” the release said.

The student, identified as Logan Reynolds, was taken into custody, the release said. Meanwhile police K-9s and the Tempe Police Department’s bomb squad were brought in to search for additional explosives, and the materials used were impounded by the Tempe Police Department, the release said.

Reynolds faces two counts of misconduct involving weapons, the release said. He was released on supervised release by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office’s detention facility, according to The State Press.

According to a police report, 19-year-old Reynolds told police he was making the devices for entertainment purposes and not to cause harm, The Associated Press reported. His next scheduled court appearance is on March 18, according to the outlet.

Reynolds is originally from California and is a chemistry major, the outlet reported.

ASU Police Chief Michael Thompson thanked the student who sent in the tip about the handmade bomb materials.

“We always say, ‘if you see something, say something,’” Thompson said in the news release. “This student saw a situation they were uncomfortable with, and followed their instincts.”

The university did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
