Driver smoked heroin in damaged car after fatally hitting cyclist, WA sheriff says
An accused hit-and-run driver was found smoking heroin in his damaged car after fatally striking a cyclist in Washington, deputies said.
Geoffrey Moore, 28, of Poulsbo, Washington, told deputies he fell asleep at the wheel and woke up to the impact of hitting something on Jan. 21 in Bremerton, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office said in a probable cause statement.
He told deputies he didn’t know what he’d struck, so he drove off.
Two witnesses told authorities they saw Moore’s 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee speeding by, deputies said.
One driver told deputies that Moore drove onto the shoulder of the road where a 62-year-old man was cycling, striking him from behind. Moore then drove away, the witness recalled.
The cyclist died at the scene, deputies said.
Deputies found a Jeep matching the description parked at an apartment complex with “fresh damage” to the front bumper, grill and hood, including what appeared to be marks from a bicycle.
Moore was sitting in the passenger seat smoking heroin with another person, deputies said.
He told the deputy he hit something after falling asleep while driving, but he drove off because he was scared.
Moore was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and hit-and-run resulting in a death.
His bail was set at $250,000.
