A son found kneeling over his injured father outside an Arizona home with a knife in his hands died after an officer shot him, police reported.

The son and father were fighting on the ground at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26, when police officers arrived in response to reports of shots being fired, the Buckeye Police Department said in a news release.

The son was kneeling over his bleeding father, who had been shot several times, with a knife in his hand, police said. The man refused the officer’s commands to drop the knife.

The officer fired, killing him, police said. The father was hospitalized but is expected to recover. Police recovered the knife and a handgun.

The officer who shot the man is on leave pending an investigation, the release said. He is a two-year veteran of the department.
