Cat pulled from burning building — ‘and he wasn’t happy,’ Texas officials say

Crews battling an apartment fire in Texas searched throughout the night for survivors — then they came across one with four legs who was rather unhappy.

The fire occurred in Amarillo just before 2 a.m. Nov. 3 at Enclave Apartments. First responders found residents attempting to flee the apartment as the blaze came through the complex’s roof and breezeways, the fire department said.

Crews contained the fire to just one building as they searched for any survivors, the Amarillo Fire Department said. One person was hospitalized with “unknown injuries,” according to officials.

Also surviving the fire was a cat, who was shown in a photo clinging to a firefighter.

“After searching all night, they have found a survivor! This cat was located somewhere in the burned building....and he wasn’t happy,” the fire department said in a Facebook post. “But he’s doing fine and everyone else was accounted for.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.

The fire department was applauded by commenters on Facebook for its efforts in rescuing the cat.

“Poor baby was happy to see their hero I bet. Thank you,” one woman said.

“That fur baby is scared & hanging on to his rescuer! Look at the lil’ claws,” another commenter said. “God bless AFD & that cat.”

Amarillo is located in the Texas panhandle about 260 miles west of Oklahoma City.
