Trump reacts to Biden’s VP pick with ‘Phony Kamala’ ad
President Donald Trump reacted to Joe Biden selecting Kamala Harris as his running mate with a video calling her “phony.”
Biden announced his selection Tuesday afternoon after a months-long process — making Harris the first Black woman to appear on the presidential ticket for a major party, McClatchy News reports.
Shortly after the announcement, Trump tweeted a video advertisement calling Harris a “phony” and saying she attacked Joe Biden for “racist policies.”
His campaign released a statement also falsely saying Harris once called Biden “a racist and asked for an apology she never received.”
During a debate for the Democratic nomination for president, Harris told Biden that “I do not believe you are a racist” while criticizing his past opinions on busing policies for schools.
Voters rejected Harris, they smartly spotted a phony,” the ad said. “But not Joe Biden.”
Harris ended her own presidential campaign in December, more than a month before the first Democratic primaries.
The campaign’s statement went on to frame Harris and Biden as associating with what it called the “radical” left.
But Trump wasn’t always critical of the senator. In 2011 and 2013, Trump donated $6,000 to Harris’ campaign for California attorney general. Ivanka Trump, his daughter, also donated $2,000 in 2014, The Sacramento Bee previously reported.
During a briefing later Tuesday, the president said Harris was his “number one pick.”
“We’ll see how she works out,” he said.
Trump went on to call Harris “extraordinarily nasty” toward Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“She was nasty to a level — that was a horrible thing the way she treated now Justice Kavanaugh — and I won’t forget that soon,” he said during the briefing.
During Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, Harris grilled him on whether he had talked to anyone about the Mueller investigation into Russian election interference.
Trump also said he was surprised Biden picked Harris and that she was “very very nasty” to him.
