Woman tries to gun down husband at hunting lease, ends up shot, Louisiana cops say

A Louisiana woman was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder of her husband, Natchitoches Parish deputies said in a news release.

Angelique (Angel) LaCaze, 54, was arrested Tuesday night after deputies received a tip saying she was shopping in a Natchitoches store, police said.

The investigation began on Christmas Eve when deputies responded to reports of a shooting on Highway 480 near Bubba Ridley Road, north of Campti, police said.

When deputies arrived, they found Angelique LaCaze with a gunshot wound to her hip. Deputies say a man, identified as her estranged husband, 53-year-old Mickey LaCaze, provided first aid to his wife.

“She is trying to kill me,” Mickey LaCaze told police.

First responders arrived and took Angelique LaCaze to Ochsner LSU Health Medical Center in critical but stable condition, authorities said.

Mickey LaCaze had gone to his hunting lease, and as he tried to “retrieve his all-terrain vehicle from an undisclosed area a female positively identified as Angelique LaCaze exited the woods and began firing a semi-automatic handgun at him,” authorities said.

Mickey LaCaze “exited the ATV and ran towards his vehicle while Mrs. LaCaze was still firing the handgun at him,” police noted. He grabbed a handgun and began to run toward the highway, where Angelique continued to shoot at him, police said.

Mickey LaCaze “allegedly yelled to her to drop the gun in which she failed to do and he fired one round striking her in the hip area,” police said. The investigation continued while Angelique LaCaze underwent treatment for her injuries in the hospital.

Deputies obtained enough “evidence and probable cause to suspect that Mrs. LaCaze was allegedly attempting to murder her husband,” police said, resulting in a “criminal warrant ... for her arrest on attempted second-degree murder charges.”

Police learned Angelique LaCaze checked out of the facility where she was being treated on Tuesday and later that evening “received a tip that Mrs. LaCaze was shopping in a Natchitoches store,” they said.

She was arrested and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center, where she awaits a bond hearing, police said.
